COURT REFERRAL PROGRAMS IN ALABAMA
Alabama has 29 local Court Referral Programs, over 100 certified Court Referral Officers, called “CROs, over 120 certified Instructors.
Depending on the type of case you have, you may be required to complete a court referral program by the judge. These programs are mandatory in certain cases such as driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) or drug possession cases.
The programs are broken down into Level I, Level II and Juvenile Programs. You will typically be assessed by a Court Referral Officer as to what level is appropriate for your individual situation.
LEVEL 1 ALCOHOL AND DRUG COURT REFERRAL PROGRAM
In a Level 1 Program you will be required to attend a minimum 12-hour presentation including an orientation to the court referral program, substance abuse, laws and consequences, alcohol education, and drugs and their effects.
Level 1 is designed for those people who do not have a substance abuse problem. Level 1 is restricted to no more than 35 students and the cost is $115.00.
The court referral program is generally structured in four three-hour sessions.

- Session 2: Laws & Consequences
- Session 3: Alcohol/Other Drugs & Their Effects
- Session 4: Looking Ahead
The Court Referral Program goals are to:
- Provide participants with information about the Alabama laws that relate to alcohol and other drugs.
- Provide participants with information about how alcohol and other drugs affect behavior, the body, the family, and community.
- Give participants an opportunity to evaluate their own use of alcohol and other drugs.
- Help participants create personal change plans to avoid problems with alcohol and other drugs in the future.
- Reduce the number of alcohol and other drug-related crimes.
